A standard double glazed window has a minimum thickness of 14mm and consists of two 4mm glass panels and a 6mm spacer. However, there are exceptions to this rule and windows are not always standard sizes. We have investigated this issue in more depth below to give you an idea of how thin they can really be.
Standard thickness of double glazed windows
The total thickness of a double glazed window is determined by the thickness of the first layer of glass plus the thickness of the spacer and the second layer of glass. You may have seen this written as 4 – 12 – 4, which means 4mm thick glass, 12mm thick spacers and 4mm thick glass, for a total thickness of 20mm. The cavity between the two panes of glass is also filled with argon or krypton gas. These gases have a lower thermal conductivity, so they help the double glazing to absorb more heat, keeping the home warmer and costing less to heat.
How thin are aluminium windows?
With an overall thickness of just 14mm, aluminium double glazing is incredibly slim. How thin are uPVC windows?
For a standard double glazed uPVC window, the total thickness can be as thin as 20mm. It consists of two 4mm thick panes separated by an 8mm spacer. However, thinner options are available.
